Douglas Wallace secure planning permission for Marborough Street
As the rejuvenation of Dublin’s North Inner City slowly moves eastward, the grant of permission for this boutique aparthotel is the first step in the rejuvenation of what was once one of Georgian Dublin’s finest social quarters.
The building, just off Marlborough St. on Marlborough Place Square, is on the site of the entrance pavilion to the lavish Georgian Marlborough Bowling Green and Pleasure Gardens.
Famously, in 1761, the Bowling Green and Gardens was the scene of a scandal where a young and naïve Lord Devlin lost his life at the hand of Mr George Reilly following a duel in defence of a young lady’s honour. The area subsequently lost its appeal and was abandoned to the city, never to recover its status, until now.
Designed by Douglas Wallace Architects, the scheme sensitively retains and restores the original brick façade of this former industrial building. An upward glazed extension creates a striking landmark anchoring this pre-Georgian Square which will serve as a link to the regenerated Talbot St.
Damian Meehan of Douglas Wallace Architects says, “This was a very special building to work with. We are delighted to bring not only this wonderful building back to life, but to play our part as a key catalyst development to unlocking the rejuvenation of the whole of the Marlborough Place Square.”
Construction is planned to commence on site as soon as Covid restrictions will allow and is expected to take approximately 12 months to complete.
